One rule. Never give Room 9 to anyone.
Rohan is twenty-four, six nights into his first job as night receptionist at the fading Glenmorrow Hotel above Shimla's Mall Road. The old manager has given him exactly one rule: never give Room 9 to anyone. Then the season's first snow falls, and at 2:13 a.m. a polite young man in a soaking-wet coat walks in and asks for Room 9 by name. The register says he checks in on this night every year, since 1987. He has never checked out.
