In a narrow lane behind Kedar Ghat in Varanasi, quiet watch-repairer Keshav inherits his late grandfather's shop and forty-one clocks. Forty of them can be stopped. The brass one cannot. It runs exactly one day ahead, and if you hold its key and say a name, its pendulum shows you that person tomorrow. Keshav begins mending small things for his neighbours. Then he notices the clock is keeping accounts. And one evening, when he says the name he loves most, the pendulum shows him nothing at all.
