They never exchanged numbers. Only notes, behind the fan of the 12:40.
Every night, ICU nurse Tara Sawant catches the 12:40 last local out of Churchgate, her father's stopped watch pinned to her kurta. Every night, the same quiet radio repairman sits in the third window seat. They never exchange numbers. Instead, they leave notes behind the old ceiling fan, through monsoon floods, Ganpati drums and Mumbai's short winter. Then, one January night, the seat is empty and the notes stop. Tara has no number, no address, and no idea what he never told her.
